Only You (The Platters)

Some songs are my favourites simply because they have the uncanny ability to cheer me up instantly.

"Only You" by The Platters is one of them. Every time the song's triplets start playing at the beginning, it gets me delightfully hyped up. I would sit up, draw a deep breath and prepare to sing along to the first notes of the melody.

My ex-colleagues would know. Whenever Lisa plays this on her speakers, she would bring up the volume for me and we would start singing along together spontaneously.

Actually, I did not start out liking the song the way I like it now. It used to be a song I associated with a funny moment from a Stephen Chow movie I watched when I was a kid. Stephen Chow played Sun Wu Kong the Monkey King and Law Kar-Ying played his naggy master Buddhist monk Xuan Zang. From my memory, Law Kar-Ying was captured by demons and in a bid to get his disciple to save him, he sang this song at the top of his lungs "only you ~ can save me ..." (changing some parts of the lyrics). The hilarious part came when he exaggerated the staccato section "Oh oh..nly you ~" by multiplying the "Oh oh" many times until it sounded like wolves howling. I remember it so well because everyone was laughing SO HARD at that part of the movie!!! Those were the good ole' days... :P

Strangely, I grew to like this song in a different way over time. I came to realise that it has very good lyrics and good singers. It is a brave and honest declaration of love to somebody and the voices of the singers blend richly in harmony. The lead vocalist sang with conviction and energy (my choir madams will probably call this "good support"?) and I find his end-of-phrase vibrato and the "Oh oh" staccato very nicely done.

This song is now on my "must sing" list whenever I go to KTV. Fun for everyone - young and old. And I no longer find the "Oh oh ~" amusing anymore because it is NOT easy to sing that part.

I understand the magic that you do

You're my dream come true
my one and only you."
